You’ve got a broken gate hinge, a cracked equipment frame, or a railing that’s pulling away from the wall. The last thing you want to hear is “bring it to the shop.” How exactly are you supposed to load a bolted-down staircase railing into your truck?

That’s the whole point of mobile welding. We bring the shop to you — welder, generator, tools, materials — and handle the job right where the problem is. No disassembly, no transport, no reassembly. Here’s how it works and why it’s usually the smarter move.

How Mobile Welding Actually Works

A mobile welding rig is a fully equipped workshop on wheels. Our truck carries:

  • A multi-process welder (MIG, TIG, and stick capable)
  • An engine-driven generator/welder for sites without power
  • Grinders, cut-off saws, and metal prep tools
  • Common steel stock — angle iron, flat bar, tube steel, plate
  • Safety equipment — fire extinguisher, welding screens, PPE

We show up, assess the job, prep the metal, and weld. Most residential repairs take between one and four hours on-site. Larger fabrication projects might take a full day or require a second visit.

When Mobile Welding Is the Right Choice

The Work Can’t Be Moved

Railings bolted to concrete. Fence posts set in the ground. Structural beams in a building. Equipment that weighs two tonnes. If it can’t come to a shop, the shop comes to it. This is the most obvious use case, and it’s probably 70% of our calls.

Disassembly Would Cost More Than the Repair

Sometimes you could unbolt something, load it up, drive it across Edmonton, wait for shop time, pick it up, and reinstall it. But by the time you factor in your time, fuel, and the hassle factor, the on-site repair is cheaper and faster. We see this constantly with trailer repairs, equipment mounts, and commercial fixtures.

Downtime Is Costing You Money

If a piece of equipment is down and every hour it sits idle costs your business money, waiting three days for a shop appointment isn’t realistic. Mobile welding means we can often be on-site within 24 to 48 hours (sometimes same-day for emergencies) and get you running again.

The Job Is Simple but Inconvenient

A cracked bracket. A broken hinge. A small hole in a steel panel. These are 30-minute repairs that don’t justify a trip to a fabrication shop. We show up, fix it, and you’re done.

What Does Mobile Welding Cost in Edmonton?

Mobile welding rates vary, but here’s the general picture for the Edmonton area:

  • Service call / minimum charge: Most mobile welders (including us) have a minimum call-out fee that covers travel and setup. This is typically equivalent to about one hour of work.
  • Hourly rate: Expect to pay between $90 and $150/hour depending on the process, complexity, and materials required.
  • Materials: Basic steel stock is usually included for small repairs. Specialty metals (aluminum, stainless) or large quantities of material are quoted separately.

Compare that to the shop alternative: drive the piece across town, pay shop rates (which are similar), pay for materials, then drive back and reinstall. The shop option also assumes the piece can be removed — which it often can’t.

What We Can Handle On-Site

People are sometimes surprised by how much can be done with a mobile rig. Here’s a sample of jobs we regularly handle in driveways, parking lots, farm yards, and commercial sites around Edmonton:

  • Railing and fence repair or fabrication
  • Trailer frame repair and modifications
  • Heavy equipment repair (buckets, booms, frames)
  • Gate hinges, latches, and structural reinforcement
  • Custom brackets, mounts, and supports
  • Steel staircase repair
  • Bollard and post installation
  • Farm equipment — augers, implements, bin legs
  • Decorative metalwork repair
  • Emergency structural repairs

What We Can’t Do On-Site (and We’ll Tell You)

We’re upfront about limitations. Some jobs genuinely need a shop environment:

  • Complex multi-piece fabrication that requires a welding table, jigs, and precise fixturing
  • Powder coating or hot-dip galvanizing — these are specialized finishing processes
  • Certified pressure vessel or pipeline welding — different regulatory requirements

If your job needs shop work, we’ll tell you. No point wasting your money on an on-site visit that won’t produce the right result.
